Sand Pits
Modified By Prof. Verkhoshansky on 5/26/2008 5:39:23 PM)

Dear Dr. Verkhoshansky

What is your opinion about the training done in sand pits (box of sand)? I heard many coaches say it is just a form of general physical preparation (GPP). And that the stimulus would be very similar to that of traditional bodybuilding since the movement is “purely muscle" without using the stretch reflex and muscle elasticity. However, I also see that it is very difficult to carry out large steps in this type of ground because their mechanical property to absorb the impact unwittingly generating an increase in the frequency of steps. This could be useful to increase the speed and power of an athlete? Or is waste of time?

Thank you very much!

Dear Marcelo Cardoso,

If you ask me about running on the sand, I don’t suggest the use of this exercise as special physical preparation mean. I agree with you,  it is very difficult to carry out large steps in this type of ground because their mechanical property to absorb the impact unwittingly generating an increase in the frequency of steps.
