Glute-Ham Raise
Prof. Verkhoshansky,

What is your opinion of the exercise "Glute-Ham Raises" in the training of sprinters and high jumpers?

Thank you,
Ben Ross

Re: Glute-Ham Raise

Its a great tool, that we have not only had positive effects in our lifters but athletes as well.

Its a needed tool in training all athletes as well as the ones you have listed.

Re: Glute-Ham Raise

Dear Ben Ross,

this is a good exercise that is traditionally used by Russian Track&Field sprinters by many years.

This exercise needs to be used carefully.

You should not use it after jump exercises or after every kind of hard training, because it’s possible to have an injury of hip back side muscles.

Re: Glute-Ham Raise
Professor,
I'd be interested in your opinion of Romanian deadlifts and hamstring leg curls as alternatives to glute-ham raises for athletes training to increase sprint speed.
Thank you,
Rick

Re: Glute-Ham Raise

Dear Rick Bland,

I think that all these three exercises could be used in a training system. Bodyweight Hamstring Leg Curls were very popular in Soviet Union in the 60th, but I never used these exercises in my practice because I preferred more specific exercises like those showed in figure 7, page 7 of SST Practical Manual for coaches.

Dr Verkhoshansky,

I have two questions regarding your comments on the Glute Ham Raise.

1. You mentioned that the exercise should not be done after intensive jump exercises etc. Should they be done on a different day or later in the same day?

2. Should one ever use maximal effort [2-3 reps]with this exercise? What is the highest intensity you would recommend?

Re: Glute-Ham Raise

Dear Yosef Johnson,

1. You mentioned that the exercise should not be done after intensive jump exercises etc. Should they be done on a different day or later in the same day?

I think that Glute Ham Raise must be included in the General Physical Preparation program and must be used in the training stage that precede the specific work, as intensive jump exercises etc.

2. Should one ever use maximal effort [2-3 reps]with this exercise? What is the highest intensity you would recommend?

I think that Glute Ham Raise is a general enforcement exercise that must not be performed with maximal effort and, generally, with high intensity.
